Retired professor James B. Swan is the speaker for the March 10 meeting of the Tennessee Valley Civil War Round Table in Huntsville.
Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Swan’s topic will be “Chicago’s Irish Legion in Dixie.” He’ll discuss the regiment’s 2,600-mile journey through seven Confederate states, participation in two battles, capture of three Southern state capitals and Sherman’s March to the Sea.
Father Denis Dunne, Vicar General of the Chicago diocese, formed the Irish-Catholic regiment in the fall of 1862 from companies recruited within Chicago and at Galena, Rockford, Joliet, Ottawa and elsewhere across Northern Illinois. Seven out of every ten officers and men were born in Ireland.
The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge, 725 Franklin St. For more information, contact round table president John Allen at 256-539-5287 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
