Did your Alabama ancestor attend public school in Birmingham?
Several of its schools are closing at the end of this school year, due to declining enrollment and revenue. Some of the schools were named after a community, but more were named after people — some whose names are no longer recognized.
Today’s Birmingham News carries a story by your blogger about these namesakes. Most people have heard of Robert E. Lee, the namesake of Lee Elementary School, but few remember Newton Hosmer Price. (He was a beloved, longtime principal of the city’s West End High School).
