The University of North Alabama in Florence will host a screening of the documentary, “The Black Press: Soliders without Swords” on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
The screening, which is open to the public, is part of the university’s Black History Month celebrations. It will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in the Communication building.
The film “is an engaging historical chronicle of newspapers that once served as the nation’s strongest voice for the African-American community,” according to a university press release. “Emmy and Sundance award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson reveals the struggles and sacrifices that generations of black journalists had to make in order to get their voices heard” in the film.
