Early 20th Century family photos from Fayette County, Alabama to be on display at Birmingham Public Library

A July 24 reception will mark the opening of a photographic display at the downtown Birmingham Public Library, 2100 Park Place.

Both Sides of the Lens: Photographs by the Shackleford Family, Fayette County, Alabama (1900-1930) will be on view in the Central Library’s Fourth Floor Gallery from July 23-Sept. 14, library officials announced. The 40 photos  were taken by a family of African-American photographers in Alabama family. They are in the collection of the Birmingham Public Library Archives.

The July 24 reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Library’s Arrington Auditorium. Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson, associate professor of American Studies at the University of Mary, will present a lecture. There will be tours of the exhibit and a heritage food tasting.

Curator Andrew Nelson will present a gallery talk at noon on July 26 at the Fourth Floor Gallery.

The exhibition is made possible by a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation.
